Ecolinguistics: History, today, and tomorrow

Abstract Since the concept of ecology was first applied to language over 50 years ago, field ecolinguistics has developed into a thriving branch linguistics that is more than ever closer pressing issues our time. This article aims trace historical development ecolinguistics, discusses main trends in current research, and provides brief projection potential future developments. The part includes an overview research connected Einar Haugen’s “Ecology Language”, published 1972, which focuses on interaction between languages multilingual contexts. A large then devoted role dealing with environmental problems (e.g. aggravating or solving them), biological understanding study inspired by Halliday’s 1990 talk “New Ways Meaning: Challenge Applied Linguistics”. Ecolinguistics will certainly have interesting future. It take up topics such as climate change, surprisingly largely been excluded from ecolinguistic until recently. Other need be dealt are negative effects tourism, migration human, plant, animal populations. Ecolinguists, future, also expand their methodology towards multimodal how non-European present ‘environment’, rather ‘con-vironment’.
